What to do with a windfall, in the right order

The money lands on a Tuesday. By the weekend you have opinions about funds you had never heard of on Monday, and two people have offered to help you invest it. Almost nothing in the first ninety days requires speed, and nearly everything sold during them is priced for the urgency you are feeling.

A salary and a windfall behave differently, which is where ordinary habits fail. A salary comes back next month, and that is what makes it forgiving: a bad decision is repaired by the next payslip. A windfall arrives once. It is capital rather than income, so the instincts that work on a salary, absorb the difference and fix it later, point the wrong way. There is no later.

The order is the whole method. The product can wait a month.

The ninety days that decide it

Most windfalls are not lost to the market. They are lost in the stretch where the balance still feels unreal and the decisions still feel free. A severance payment, an inheritance, a house sale, a bonus, an insurance payout: the money arrives as one large number, big enough that ordinary judgement stops applying to it.

So the first move is thirty days of nothing. No research month, no meetings. Park the whole amount somewhere boring with insurance behind it, which in the US means 250,000 per depositor per bank, and let the feeling come down before a transfer leaves the account. Doing nothing is not indecision. It is the only item here that a bad week cannot undo.

One more thing belongs in that window, and it is not an investment: the paper trail. In most states an inheritance stays separate property only while you can trace it, and a joint account erases the trace.
